Extract Tool Use Cases

2021.2 and newer

This section includes various use cases showing the enhanced capabilities of the extract tool.

For example, assume you want to use the extract tool on the following pattern piece.

Pattern piece

The piece has edges that create three self-contained areas that the extract tool can be used on. Therefore you could use the extract tool to extract a copy of each of the three areas from the piece, or two connected areas, or the whole piece.

For example, assume you want to use the extract tool on the following pattern piece.

Pattern piece

The piece has two darts and an internal line that goes from edge to edge. This creates four self-contained areas that the extract tool can be used on, Therefore you could use the extract tool to extract a copy of each of the four areas from the piece.

Or, you could use the extract tool to produce a copy of the top two areas.

Producing a copy of the top two areas

If an internal line goes through a closed shape inside a pattern piece, you can use the extract tool on the closed shape, but not on part of it as set by the internal line.

For example, assume you want to use the extract tool on the following pattern piece.

Pattern piece

You could select the part on the left of the internal line, the pocket (a closed shape), or the part on the right of the internal line. You could not select part of the pocket.

Overlapping Pieces

You can also use the extract tool on overlapping pattern pieces. The areas that you can use the extract tool on are defined as normal with the effect that you can, if you want, combine parts of two different pattern pieces.

Extracting overlapping pieces

When using the extract tool on overlapping pieces, any hole or space between the selected pieces is filled in.

Diamond Dart

You can extract from a pattern piece containing a diamond dart provided an internal line goes from edge to edge through the center of the diamond dart. Note that in the following image, textures are hidden so the complete internal line is visible.

Guidelines

When using the extract tool, guidelines that cross a pattern piece are recognized for the purposes of defining areas that can be selected. There is no need to convert the guidelines to internal lines.
