Symmetrical Poses

The design poses feature allows you to configure the individual joints of a pose. You may want to create a pose that is symmetrical: the left side and right side of the pose are mirror images.

The procedure to make a symmetrical pose depends on whether using a parametric avatar or a scanned imported avatar.

Making a Symmetrical Pose for a Parametric Avatar

When making a symmetrical pose using a parametric avatar, note the following:

    • You may freely position the joints in the center of the avatar pose - the center line through which the symmetry runs. For example, in the following image, there are center joints on the nose, chin, neck, and so on. (These are the joints without a red circle highlight or letter label.)

    • For four specified special joints - two pairs of matching joints - you must use calculated coordinates as detailed below. The four special joints are labeled 1 and 2 and circled in red and yellow in the following image.

    • For all other points, you use the same matching coordinates on each matching left and right joint.

    • For example, if you edit the position of the joint marked in red as A, you use the same coordinates for the joint marked in yellow as A. If you edit the position of the joint marked in red as B, you use the same coordinates for the joint marked in yellow as B, and so on.

In short, when creating a symmetrical pose for a parametric avatar, there are two separate procedures:

Making a Symmetrical Pose from an Imported Avatar

When making a symmetrical pose using an imported avatar, note the following:

    • You may freely position the joints in the center of the avatar pose: the center line through which the symmetry runs. For example, in the following image, there are center joints on the head, neck, chest, and so on. (These are the joints without a letter label.)

    • For all other points, you use the same matching coordinates on each matching left and right joint.

      For example, if you edit the position of the joint marked in red as A, you use the same coordinates for the joint labeled in yellow as A. If you edit the position of the joint labeled in red as B, you use the same coordinates for the joint labeled in yellow as B, and so on.

Imported avatar skeleton

Using the preceding image as a starting point, assume you edit the joint on the left of the image labeled with a red A. Now you need to edit the joint on the right of the image labeled with a yellow A.

To set the yellow A joint:

  1. In the 3D window, click the red A joint to select it.

  2. Go to the Edit Pose pane and make a note of the values shown for X, Y and Z.

  3. In the 3D window, click the yellow A joint.

  4. Go to the Edit Pose pane and type in the values you noted for X, Y and Z. The red and yellow A joints are symmetrical.
