Applying Fabrics

In this part of the tutorial, you apply fabrics to the garment design.
Viewing the Fabrics
First, let's look at the available fabrics.
To view the fabrics:

If the Materials tab is not already open, on the Resources tabs, click Materials.

On the Materials tab, go to the Fabrics section.
The Fabrics section displays thumbnails of the available fabrics.
The icon at the top of this thumbnail means that the fabric has different properties on the face and back.
The icon at the bottom of this thumbnail means that the fabric is applied to at least one pattern piece.
You can hover over a fabric thumbnail to view more options. For example, hover over a fabric thumbnail and click
to view a menu.
Now, let's apply some fabrics. Expand and work through the following, in order:

You can apply (or assign) fabrics using drag and drop or the assign tool. To start, let's use the assign tool.
First, you assign the French Terry 1 fabric to the sleeves, front, and back pieces of the sweatshirt.
To assign the fabric to these pieces:

On the Materials tab, go to the Fabrics section.
The Fabrics section displays thumbnails of the available fabrics.

The first fabric to be assigned is French Terry 1.
Click the thumbnail of the French Terry 1 fabric to select it. If selected, the thumbnail displays with a blue border.

On the Main toolbar, click Assign.

On the Horizontal contextual menu, ensure that French Terry 1 is displayed as the selected material.
If French Terry 1 is not displayed as the selected fabric, go to the Fabrics section and click the thumbnail to select it.

Go to the 2D window, and click inside these four pieces:
The two sweatshirt sleeves
The sweatshirt front
The sweatshirt back
The following image shows the fabric being assigned to the pieces.
As you assign the fabric, the 3D window display is updated.
Next, you assign the 2 x 2 Rib 1 fabric to the cuffs, collars, triangle inset, and so on.
To assign the fabric to these pieces:

On the Materials tab, go to the Fabrics section.
The Fabrics section displays thumbnails of the available fabrics.

The second fabric to be assigned is 2 x 2 Rib 1.
Click the thumbnail of the 2 x 2 Rib 1 fabric to select it. If selected, the thumbnail displays with a blue border.

On the Main toolbar, click Assign.

On the Horizontal contextual menu, ensure that 2 x 2 Rib 1 is displayed as the selected material.
If 2 x 2 Rib 1 is not displayed as the selected fabric, go to the Fabrics section and click the thumbnail to select it.

Go to the 2D window, and click inside the remaining pieces of the sweatshirt, as shown in the following image.
As you assign the fabric, the 3D window display is updated.
The sweatshirt should display in the 3D window something like the following image.
Remember that you can easily see the fabrics in use on pieces by looking for the 'tick' icon on the fabric thumbnail on the Materials tab.
If you haven't already done so, now would be a good time to practice moving the avatar, so you can see around the garment in 3D. For more information, refer to Using the Mouse.

As was said in the section about applying fabrics to the sweatshirt, you can apply (or assign) fabrics using drag and drop or the assign tool. In this section, let's start off using drag and drop.
First, you assign the French Terry 2 fabric to the four leg pieces of the sweatpants.
To assign the fabric to these pieces:

On the Materials tab, go to the Fabrics section.
The Fabrics section displays thumbnails of the available fabrics.

The next fabric to be assigned is French Terry 2.

In the Fabrics section, drag the French Terry 2 to one of the leg pieces in the 2D window, as shown in the following image.
The French Terry 2 fabric is assigned to the piece.

Go to the Context view where the following is displayed.
The Replace All option displays when you drag and drop fabric. It allows you to repeat the same fabric replacement throughout the garment.
For example, in this garment you replaced French Terry 3 fabric with French Terry 2 fabric, so the option allows you to replace all French Terry 3 fabric with French Terry 2 fabric.
The option is convenient when you want to replace one fabric with another in several pieces.
In this tutorial, you are not using the Replace All option. But you can always try it out, and use the Undo feature to get you back to where you were. To use undo, on the Main toolbar, click
.
Now, let's assign French Terry 2 fabric to the other three leg pieces using the assign tool.

On the Main toolbar, click Assign.

On the Horizontal contextual menu, ensure that French Terry 2 is displayed as the selected material.
If French Terry 2 is not displayed as the selected fabric, go to the Fabrics section and click the thumbnail to select it.

Go to the 2D window, and click inside the three leg pieces that still have their original fabric.
The following image shows the fabric being assigned to the pieces.
As you assign the fabric, the 3D window display is updated.
Next, you assign the 2 x 2 Rib 2 fabric to the leg bottom pieces of the sweatpants.
To assign the fabric to these pieces:

On the Materials tab, go to the Fabrics section.

The fabric to be assigned is 2 x 2 Rib 2.
Click the thumbnail of the 2 x 2 Rib 2 fabric to select it. If selected, the thumbnail displays with a blue border.

On the Main toolbar, click Assign.

On the Horizontal contextual menu, ensure that 2 x 2 Rib 2 is displayed as the selected fabric.
If 2 x 2 Rib 2 is not displayed as the selected fabric, go to the Fabrics section and click the thumbnail to select it.

Go to the 2D window, and click inside the leg bottom pieces of the sweatpants, as shown in the following image.
As you assign the fabric, the 3D window display is updated.
The garments should display in the 3D window something like the following image.

If you haven't already done so, save your work.
To save the file:
On the Main Menu, click File, then Save As. A file explorer window is displayed.
Type in the name you want for the file.
Navigate to where you want to save the file.

Click Save.
A folder is created with the garment name. The file is saved in that folder as a VSGX file with the appropriate supporting folders. From now on, if you want to open the garment, open the VSGX file.
Now, let's apply the seam materials. Continue with Applying Seam Materials.
