Using Animation

Tip

For the best output using this feature, it is recommended to enable Enhanced Layer Blending.

To enable (if not already marked as selected as in the image above):

  1. On the Main menu, click Garment.

  2. Click Enhanced Layer Blending.

The following is one suggested workflow for the animation feature.

  1. Open a garment

  2. Open the Animation workspace

  3. Load a suitable avatar in the workspace

  4. Preview the avatar animation

  5. Dress the avatar

  6. Record the animation

  7. Play the animation

  8. Export the animation

Opening a Garment

To use the Animation workspace, you must have a garment open. In addition, the avatar in use must be animation capable. For example, Olivia and Oliver.

To open a garment:

  1. On the Main menu, click File, then Open. A file explorer window is displayed.

  2. Navigate to where the garment file is located and select it.

  3. Click Open. The file opens in the application.

Opening the Animation Workspace

Once you have a garment open, you can open the Animation workspace.

To open the Animation workspace:

  1. On the Main toolbar, click the workspace selector (on the far left side of the toolbar). It may display Home, Colorways, or Fold & Hang depending on the workspace you are currently using.

  2. Click Animation. The Animation workspace is displayed.

Loading a Suitable Avatar

Note

Only avatars following the naming convention (whose name includes animation or animated), and our new parametric avatars Olivia and Oliver are displayed in the workspace.

To load an avatar in the workspace:

  1. If not already open, go to the Animation workspace.

  2. If the Avatars tab is not displayed, on the Resources tabs click 3D then Avatars.

    The avatars with animation sequences available for selection are displayed in the tab.

  3. Double-click the avatar you want to use. The avatar is loaded into the 3D window.

Previewing the Animation

Before using animation, you can preview the animation sequence. You can also change the playback, camera, and simulation settings.

To preview the animation sequence:

  1. In the Animation workspace, go to the Animation bar.

  2. Go to the Animation selector and click dis-drpdown.png.

    The available animation sequences are displayed.

    Note

    • Most imported avatars typically have one sequence. Olivia and Oliver have several sequences to choose from.

    • For information about importing animation sequences, refer to Import Animation.

  3. Click the animation sequence you want to use.

  4. Go to the Animation controls and click the Play button.

    The animation sequence is previewed in the 3D window.

    Tip

    You can change the playback settings, camera views, and simulation settings as required. For more information, refer to Animation Tab.

Dressing the Avatar

In the Animation workspace, you dress the avatar as in the regular workspace:

To dress the avatar:

  1. On the Main toolbar, click Dress.

  2. Either wait till the simulation completes, or on the Main toolbar, click Finish.

Tip

You can make 3D styling changes before performing the animation. For more information, refer to 3D Styling.

Recording the Animation

Once you have the avatar dressed as required in the Animation workspace, you can record the animation. Note that the record button only displays after dressing the avatar in the workspace.

To record the animation:

  1. Go to the Context view.

  2. If the Animation tab is not already open, click Animation.

  3. Edit the settings as required. For more information, refer to Animation Tab.

  4. Go to the Animation bar and on the controls click the Record button.

  5. On the controls, click the Pause button if you want to stop the recording.

    When the sequence finishes, the animation clip is saved to the Clips tab. For more information, refer to Clips tab.

    Tip

    Clip files are large. It is recommended to delete clips that are no longer needed.

Playing an Animation

Once you have recorded an animation, you can play it again in the workspace.

To play an animation:

  1. Go to the Resources tabs.

  2. If the Clips tab is not already open, click 3D then Clips.

  3. On the Clips tab. click the clip you want to play.

  4. Edit the Playback Settings as required. For more information, refer to Animation Tab.

  5. Go to the Animation bar and on the controls click the Play button.

Exporting the Animation

You can export an animation as a render or a 3D object. Typically, render output is best for presentation and 3D output is best for cases where you want to add further content, such as lighting, or combine animations.

To export an animation from the Animation workspace:

  1. Go to the Resources tabs.

  2. If the Clips tab is not already open, click 3D then Clips.

  3. On the Clips tab. click the clip you want to export.

  4. Go to the Context view.

  5. If the Export tab is not already open, click Export.

  6. To export the animation as a 3D object:

    1. If not already open, click 3D.

    2. Edit the settings as required. For more information, refer to 3D Tab.

    3. Click Export.

  7. To export a render of the animation:

    1. If not already open, click Render.

    2. Edit the settings as required. For more information, refer to Render Tab.

    3. Click Render.
