I need to cut out a shape on a frontpanel of a garment, to show that there is a flap that buttons it close.

I don't know how to cut out a shape from the pattern, the slice option does not seem to work?

This should be a very easy thing to do, yet I cannot seem to get it.

I attached a screenshot, the white area would have to be the cutout so the skin shows behind....

  • Hi Astrid,

    Thanks for reaching out!

The slice option is not able to cut a shape out of a full pattern piece. Instead, we can create the look of a hole by shaping it into the pattern from the edge.

Start by adding three close together corner points at the edge where you want to cut into the piece. Set all points to sharp or curved. Drag the center corner point into the pattern. Add additional points and handles to shape out the hole. Stitch the cut together so that only the hole is open. Turn off stitch construction on the cut edges. This is displayed in the image below. • Hi,

I tried to follow the step to do the same things, but it still didn't turn out like that, could you screenshot or take the video of the steps/how you do it?

    Thank you so much!

  • Sherry,

it definitely worked for me just following the instructions, I attached a screenshot of a quick mock-up. You sort of need to add more than three points once you are in the fabric cut-out to get the shape you want, and you need to make the stitching points corner points.  What is it that you have issues with?

  • Astrid,

Thank you for the clarification! I think I did it! But I have a question. If two lines I set to stitch together are far from each line, will the edge be wrinkle?

I attached the pic and circle the areas I am concerned about.

    Thank you,

    Sherry

  • Hi Sherry,

Following up to your last question, the goal would be to have the opening that will be stitched together as narrow as possible. That should help to reduce any bumps and make it look seamless. If you have already created your cut out and need the opening to be more narrow, you are still able to edit it. The easiest option after you have created the opening would be to use the slide tool in edit points mode.

    1. First make sure that the points that join the edges of your cut out shape are changed to corner points.

    2. Make sure that there are no regular points hiding underneath your corner points. This can sometimes interfere with the slide tool functioning correctly. If you do see any, select them and delete them. Regular points are circular so you may see it sitting on the diamond shaped corner point. See below image for reference:

    3. With edit points on select the slide tool. Select one edge of the opening that you would like to narrow down and drag it closer to the other edge. It should look like the image below if it is functioning correctly (dotted lines reflect the new line):

    4. The slide tool also works on points so if one edge of your stitched line is shorter than the other, you can drag the point down to make them equal. See below image for reference:

Hope that clears things up for you. Best of luck!
