Unable to remove seam allowance

I am following the video step by step, but when I type in a negative seam allowance and click, this number converts back to a positive number. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi there, 
     
    To understand this question I drew a simple pattern shape. I was able to assign minus seam allowance, while my shape is locked. 
     
    One could sew it and simulate it in this state. The seam allowance is -1 during the whole time. Meaning, my shape's edge is the seam allowance and my sew line is minus from that. 
     
    However, if you would like to make some changes in the shape, you must unlock the protection. As result, your edges will now be the sew line and the seam allowance becomes a plus value.  
     
    So if you unlock the protection, you will actually get the plus value.
