Refining Grid Details with Grid Subdivision

In Browzwear VStitcher 2025.1 and newer, you can refine your garment's grid by using Grid Subdivision, allowing you to focus detail only on the edges or lines of the garment. This feature is helpful when garment details are concentrated near the edges, like a gathered sleeve cap or waistband.

What is Grid Subdivision

  • Grid Subdivision reduces the grid size along a selected edge or line, making the details more refined without affecting the whole pattern.
  • This is especially useful for garments with details near the edges, helping improve simulation speeds by limiting the grid refinement to specific areas.

How to Apply Grid Subdivision

  1. Select the edge or line you want to apply the subdivision to.
  2. In the Context View, under Simulation Properties, check Grid Subdivision.
  3. Use the Subdivision dropdown to choose the level of refinement. You can select up to x5:
    • For example:
      • x2: Reduces grid size to half (e.g., grid size of 0.5 if the pattern grid size is set to 1).
      • x3: Reduces grid size to a third (e.g., grid size of 0.33).
      • x5: Reduces grid size to a fifth (e.g., grid size of 0.2).
  4. In the Depth field, set how far from the edge the subdivision should be applied (e.g., 5 cm for gathers on a sleeve).
  5. Dress the garment to see the results. You can enable the Tension Map to visualize the grid size transition from the edge to the rest of the pattern.

Note

The grid size will never go below 0.1.

Example Use Cases for Grid Subdivision

1. Pants with Elastic Waistband

  • In pants where the waistband is part of the same pattern as the legs and folded over with elastic:
    • Select the waistband edge and apply Grid Subdivision.
    • Set Depth to 20 cm (to cover a bit beyond the waistband).
    • Increase subdivision for more detail at the top of the garment.
    • Dress the garment to see the improvement in gathers.

2. Puffy Garments with Creases

  • For garments like puffy jackets, where you want creases to be more visible along quilt lines:
    • Select internal lines and apply Grid Subdivision.
    • Set Depth as required (e.g., 10 cm).
    • Dress the garment and see the visible improvement in creases and drape.
    • Adjusting grid only along lines rather than the whole pattern speeds up the simulation, especially with complex garments.

Tips for Efficient Use of Grid Subdivision

  • Focus grid refinement only on areas that need detail, such as gathered edges, waistband folds, or quilt lines.
  • Adjust Subdivision values for finer details
