Replacing Pieces and Retaining Attributes

VS.svg

You can replace a pattern piece in a garment while maintaining the existing settings and properties of the original piece, such as stitching, materials, symmetry, and other important attributes. This feature is essential for quickly updating garment silhouettes, such as adjusting neckline shapes or changing fits.

The replacement piece can come from another BW/DXF file or from the current file you are working on.

If you would like to only replace internal lines within patterns and not the shape, read this article: Replacing Internal Lines Between Patterns

Requirements for Replacing Pieces

For this feature to work, the following properties of the new piece must match those of the existing piece you want to replace:

Replace from Another File Replace from Current File
  • Name
  • Number of edges
  • Number of grading sizes
  • Number of edges
  • Number of grading sizes

Note

As of Version 2025.1, more elements can now be replaced and transferred, including internal lines, points, line properties, and grading rules.

Replacing Pieces from Another File

  1. Select the pattern piece you want to replace.
  2. In the Main Toolbar, go to Edit > Replace Pieces > From File (Single Piece).
  3. Choose the external file containing the piece you want to use.
  4. Click OK.

New in 2025.1:

  • Internal lines, grading rules, and non-matching elements are transferred from the external file.
  • Matching internal lines will replace existing ones in the current file with their properties retained.
  • Non-matching lines from the external file are added to the current file without altering their properties (curve, grading, position).

Replacing Pieces from the Current File

  1. Select both the original pattern piece and the replacing piece.
  2. In the Main Toolbar, go to Edit > Replace Pieces > and choose whether to include Shape Only or With Internal Elements.

New in 2025.1:

  • When you choose to replace With Internal Elements, internal lines are swapped between the two pieces, inheriting each other’s properties, and matching lines are aligned based on their centerlines.
  • Seams, textures will be retained from the original piece,
  • It is highly recommended to review the stitch placement after replacing.

Known Limitations:

  • "Cross" Property: Internal lines with a "Cross" property will not be replaced.
  • Hidden Elements: Hidden internal lines will be transferred with a notification, and locked elements will prompt a confirmation.
  • 3D trims, artworks, attachments, and holes are not supported during the replacement process.
