Understanding 3D Layers

The 3D layer feature allows you to organize and manage pattern pieces with a stacking order. The feature is useful when working with garments that have multiple pieces stacked on top of one another, such as patch pockets, plackets, or cuffs.

The 3D layer feature uses the following logic:

  • Layers with lower number values are closer to the body

  • Layers with higher numbers are further from the body

  • By default, all pattern pieces are assigned to layer 2

  • Layer 0 is the layer closest to the body.

To use the 3D Layer feature for pieces:

  1. On the Main toolbar, click Select.

    Select

  2. On the Horizontal contextual menu, ensure Pieces is selected.

    Pieces is selected

  3. In the 2D window, select a piece. The Context view is displayed with Piece selected. 3D Layer is displayed in the Draping Properties section.

  4. Type in the value you want for 3D Layer for the selected piece.

  5. Repeat steps 3-4 for each piece whose 3D Layer property you want to edit.

  6. Save the file: on the Main toolbar, click Save.

Pieces stack in layer order in their cluster in arrange mode and prepare mode. For more information, refer to How to Arrange Pieces.
